Captain Hossam Hassan, the Egyptian national team coach, spoke about the genocide in Gaza, and the very next day Egypt experienced what many people described as some of the most controversial refereeing decisions in World Cup history.
Coincidence? I don't think so, however, everyone is free to answer that question differently.
Apart from the match result, history will remember the day Egypt raised the Palestinian flag at the World Cup. Regardless of opinions surrounding the tournament, that moment has already become part of the memory of many supporters.
Some people insist that everything surrounding the match was completely fair and that any claim of controversy is nothing more than falling for propaganda.
According to that view, believing there was robbery in the officiating simply reflects a victim mentality that assumes Arabs are always subjected to discrimination or racism.
They argue that the Egypt vs. Argentina match was refereed fairly, and they support that position with posts, articles, reels, interviews, stories, and countless pieces of content that reinforce their conclusion.
But what happens once you become convinced of a particular theory?
You naturally begin noticing the evidence that supports it. You collect examples that strengthen your belief, reinforce your principles, and validate the conclusion you have already reached.
The same mechanism works regardless of which side of the argument you stand on.
If you show me a reel of one referee saying that a certain decision was correct, I can show you ten referees saying it was incorrect. If you show me articles defending the officiating, I can find articles criticizing it. If you show me interviews praising the referees, I can find interviews calling the match rigged.
The idea is simple: you often end up seeing what you are already prepared to believe. There is no definitive proof that forces everyone to reach the same conclusion.
That is exactly why I reject the accusation that I simply "fell for propaganda."
Me falling for propaganda is far too simplistic an explanation. The world itself is already saturated with propaganda from every direction.
Every institution, every media outlet, every government, and every narrative attempts to shape perception in one way or another. Recognizing that reality is not the same as blindly accepting every claim.
You cannot convince me that I am brainwashed while we are all Arabs and we both understand how easily discrimination, exclusion, or prejudice can emerge in different parts of the world.
And even if I am, as an Arab, biased to believe that my country still has a rightful claim to it, it's normal to choose to support your country and your team no matter what happens, even if that means looking for the slightest gaps to prove your point, or to defend your innocence instead of accepting the claims and to overcome the role of a "victim."
Isn't that exactly what advocates do?
Justice is not always demanded immediately; sometimes people simply notice patterns. I have seen questionable officiating in matches that had nothing to do with my country, and sometimes the distribution of those decisions appears difficult to ignore, like yes, I wouldn't go scream at USA getting fucked up in a soccer game for an example, but I got eyes, I can see, just as simple.
Captain Hossam Hassan led Egypt to the World Cup Round of 16.
And he was able to make use of it by speaking up and standing for the Palestinian case.
Hats off for this man, nothing could’ve made us more fulfilled.
A clean reputation and honor are all I ever want in a world like this.
The world witnessing truth is priceless and timeless.
